Learn More about Flatiron Building

The Flatiron Building is a must-see in New York. Located in Manhattan, at the intersection of Broadway, 5th Avenue and 23rd Avenue, this unusual building is one of the oldest in the Big Apple. It was built in 2 years, between 1900 and 1902 by the architect Daniel Burnham for George A. Fuller, a rich businessman. It was inaugurated under the name of Fuller Building but its triangular shape quickly earned it the nickname of Flatiron Building (flat iron). 87 meters high and with 22 floors, it was at the time the highest skyscraper in the city. The atypical shape of the building is due to the fact that Broadway Avenue is the only street in the city that does not respect the alignment plan with right-angled intersections of other arteries. The building is composed of three triangular facades and a fine point only 2 meters wide. The facades are rounded and present an Arts Nouveau style and Renaissance elements. The Flatiron Building was one of the first to be built with a steel frame and concrete and terra cotta cladding. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. In 1929, the Fuller Company left the building to make way for new companies and some stores. You will not be able to visit the Flatiron Building unless you have an appointment with one of these companies. You can however visit the lobby where a presentation, with photos, of the history of the building is displayed. It is open every day from 11am to 8pm. Take the opportunity to go to Madison Square Park where you will have a nice view on the building. Finally, you can see it from the top of the Empire State Building. Very represented in the popular culture, to shelter the offices of the editorial staff of the hero of Spider-Man or destroyed by the American troops in Godzilla, the Flation Building is an emblem of New York and thus a must-see during a visit of the Big Apple.
